Abreu Advogados hosts conference on the challenges of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure

The main challenges facing the Portuguese criminal justice system will be discussed on 6 November at the Abreu Advogados auditorium in Lisbon, during a conference organised by the Terra de Lei journal under the theme “Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure – New and Old Challenges”.

Organised by the Association of Jurists of Pampilhosa da Serra (AJPS), with the support of Abreu Advogados and the Instituto de Conhecimento, the event brings together judges, academics and legal professionals to reflect on developments in criminal justice, addressing both longstanding legal issues and emerging challenges arising from technological and social changes.

Key topics include the protection of crime victims, the challenges posed by artificial intelligence to fundamental rights, information security and digital forensics, developments in case law concerning the crime of rape, and the means of obtaining evidence provided for under the Cybercrime Law.

Pedro Barosa, partner at Abreu Advogados, is among the speakers and will deliver a presentation on “Legal Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence and Crimes Against Sexual Self-Determination”, scheduled for 11.40 am. The session will explore the legal framework for victim protection and the issues that continue to prompt debate in criminal investigations and the administration of justice.

The programme also features Sandra dos Reis Luís, Court of Appeal Judge, Rogério Bravo, Criminal Investigation Coordinator at the Portuguese Criminal Police (Polícia Judiciária), Helena Morão, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, and António Brito Neves, Assistant Professor at the same institution.

By bringing together different perspectives and professional experiences, the conference aims to contribute to discussions on the current challenges facing Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure, fostering dialogue between academia and legal practitioners.
