Ana Rita Duarte de Campos comments on Government Programme for Justice

Ana Rita Duarte de Campos, interviewed by Advocatus regarding the Government’s Programme in the area of Justice, believes that an immediate reform is not required, but rather targeted and gradual measures, such as digitalisation – “which still has a long way to go”.

The professional partner at Abreu Advogados, and a specialist in Criminal, Sanctions and Compliance Law, criticised the government’s tendency to reduce procedural safeguards. She highlights, in particular, the limitation of the pre-trial phase to a procedural filtering stage without evidence, and the application of extended confiscation measures without a criminal conviction – both of which she considers to be serious errors.

Concluding on a “positive note”, she welcomed the attention given to victims’ rights:
“I would highlight the concern with the rights of victims and of those deemed unfit to stand trial. The latter have long been overlooked, and it is an issue that is sadly too rarely discussed.”
