Pedro Barosa comments on the Rato Police Station case on RTP Notícias
Pedro Barosa, criminal law specialist at Abreu Advogados, comments to RTP Notícias on the case involving PSP officers from the Rato police station in Lisbon, who have been accused of the crimes of torture, assault causing bodily harm and rape.
The lawyer states that, in addition to the offences already mentioned, “the crime of failure to provide assistance may also be at issue, insofar as other PSP officers allegedly passively witnessed this unlawful conduct and did nothing to assist the victims”.
Should these officers be convicted, “the applicable penalty framework is more severe since, as criminal police officers, they bear increased responsibility because their role is to ensure public safety, not to commit crimes”.
