Manuel Andrade Neves analyses levies on energy companies’ profits

Manuel Andrade Neves has authored an opinion article in ECO in which he examines the proposal to introduce a new levy on the profits of energy companies.

In the article, the lawyer warns of the risks associated with broad, one-size-fits-all fiscal measures, stressing that not all companies in the sector benefit equally from exceptional circumstances. He highlights, in particular, the need to distinguish between traditional operators and those that have consistently invested in renewable energy.

The coordinator of the Public and Environment practice at Abreu Advogados argues that the adoption of extraordinary fiscal measures, without proper differentiation and technical grounding, may create distortions and undermine investment in the sector. The article thus contributes to the debate on the coherence and effectiveness of fiscal policy in the current energy context.
