Abreu Advogados is the most nominated Portuguese firm at The Lawyer European Awards 2026

Abreu Advogados has made the shortlist for the 2026 edition of The Lawyer European Awards, with two nominations, making it the most nominated Portuguese firm in this edition. The Lawyer European Awards recognize, every year, the law firms that have stood out most across Europe, based on the assessment of a jury made up of senior lawyers from law firms and multinational companies.

This year, Abreu Advogados is nominated in the categories “Law Firm of the Year: Iberia” and “Most Impactful ESG Initiative”. The first recognizes firms that, over the past year, have shown outstanding performance in the Iberian Peninsula, responding robustly to market challenges while maintaining a high level of client service. The second honours environmental, social and governance initiatives with real, measurable impact, with Abreu’s nomination supported by the Tâmega Electroproduction System (SET) project.

The SET is Portugal’s largest wind-hydro hybrid system, developed for Iberdrola, representing an investment of close to €1.5 billion. The project combines three hydroelectric plants and a wind farm connected to a single grid access point, a solution that reduces the environmental impact of connection infrastructure and increases Portugal’s pumped-storage capacity by around 30%, contributing to the country’s decarbonisation goals and to the closure of its coal-fired power plants. Abreu Advogados has followed this project since the tender phase, in 2008, mobilising a multidisciplinary team of more than 30 lawyers who handled regulatory, tax, corporate, real estate and structured finance matters, including around 7,500 expropriation proceedings covering more than 3,100 land parcels, totalling 1,350 hectares.

The winners of The Lawyer European Awards 2026 will be announced on 26 November, at a ceremony to be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, in London.
