João Bravo da Costa calls for a strategic shift in Angola’s energy transition

João Bravo da Costa is the author of the opinion article “Energy Transition in Angola: A Strategic Urgency, Not an Option”, published in Jornal Económico, in which he analyses the central role of energy in today’s geopolitics and the structural challenges Angola faces in diversifying its energy and economic model.

In the article, the lawyer highlights that growing climate pressure, geopolitical tensions and the volatility of energy markets have made energy security a strategic element in the global balance of power: “For Angola, the energy transition is not merely an environmental agenda driven by international commitments.”

In this context, he argues that Angola cannot remain excessively dependent on oil, which for decades accounted for more than 95% of the country’s exports, particularly at a time when a significant part of the population still lacks access to electricity, especially in rural areas.

To address this challenge, he advocates the need for an integrated strategy linking energy, industry and financing, creating regulatory and institutional conditions that strengthen investor confidence and enable the country to establish itself as a significant producer of clean energy on the African continent.
