Abreu Advogados advises United Nations Development Programme project in São Tomé and Príncipe
José Eduardo Martins, a partner at Abreu Advogados, is in São Tomé and Príncipe finalising the project for the new environmental regime at the General Directorate for the Environment. The project, promoted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is being developed by a multidisciplinary and international team led by the firm’s partner, to update the Basic Environmental Law and, at the same time, the Decree on the Regulation of the Environmental Impact Assessment Process (EIA) of São Tomé and Príncipe.
Abreu Advogados developed the legal framework for the current and future environmental and conservation challenges of São Tomé and Príncipe, which, despite the small size of its territory, has significant biodiversity. Given the population growth and the country’s need for development, there is a greater demand for natural resources – which requires institutional stability and the capacity to guarantee the sustainability of the country, which is in a critical phase of growth. Abreu Advogados, through a team that includes lawyers and environmental engineers, faced the challenges of applying the necessary mechanisms to achieve long-term sustainability in São Tomé and Príncipe.
This project is shortlisted in The Lawyer European Awards 2024, in the Best ESG Initiative category, and the winners will be announced on 28 November. This award highlights initiatives that are part of a strategy of sustainability in São Tomé and Príncipe.
