Ricardo Henriques argues there will be more time to comply with the AI Act without halting digital compliance
Ricardo Henriques argues that the European Commission’s proposal for a new digital package, the Digital Omnibus, “is merely an opportunity to do things with more time and greater care”. The European Commission has put forward this proposal, which opens the door to changes in several regulations, in an attempt to “simplify” life for companies.
In an article published by Observador, the partner at Abreu Advogados also considers it reductive to focus the debate on the Digital Omnibus solely on artificial intelligence, although he acknowledges that AI has captured much of the attention for reasons linked to innovation, competitiveness and sovereignty.
In his view, the Brussels proposal should be approached more broadly, as an exercise in clarifying, harmonising and fine-tuning the existing digital regulatory framework. He also stresses that this postponement should not be interpreted as an invitation to inertia, nor as a step backwards in the European regulatory landscape.
The proposed postponement of the AI Act may allow companies “a little more breathing space to plan in a more careful and attentive manner” and thus also “to have greater certainty about what they are doing”, he emphasises.
