New gold visa regime promises opportunities

Maria Cabral de Azevedo, Senior Associate at Abreu Advogados, and Raquel Brito, Associate, comment in the Investment Guide of the Jornal de Negócios on the impact of the change in the Residence Permit for Investment Activity regime, known as the “Gold Visas”, which will change as of January 1, 2022. The changes foresee an increase in the minimum amounts of investment for the types of activity eligible for the purposes of the residence permit application. At the same time, within the same framework, real estate investments for residential purposes are restricted in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto and in almost all of the Algarve, with the exception of some parishes, seeking to direct them towards the interior of mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira.

In the article, the Abreu Associates refer that “the greatest impact that we estimate will be verified will be in the real estate sector” and that “it will be difficult for the programme to stagnate due to the increase in the minimum value in the options in which this increase will take place”.
