Sofia Rijo writes opinion article for Jornal Económico on the new era of e-commerce in the EU

Sofia Rijo, Professional Patner at Abreu Advogados in the Customs Law and International Trade practice, has written an opinion article for Jornal Económico on the end of the customs duty exemption applicable to low-value consignments and the impact of this change on e-commerce in the European Union.

In the article, entitled “The end of the customs duty exemption and the new era of e-commerce in the EU: the 3 euros that change everything”, Sofia Rijo analyses the new European regulatory framework, which provides for the abolition, from 1 July 2026, of the customs duty exemption for consignments with an intrinsic value not exceeding 150 euros, replacing it with a flat-rate customs duty of 3 euros per item.

The lawyer notes that this measure represents more than a tax change, forming the first pillar of a digital and structural transformation of the European customs system. The reform seeks to address the challenges posed by the exponential growth of cross-border e-commerce, strengthening fair competition between operators established in the European Union and international platforms.
