Following months of negotiations between the Government, the UGT (General Workers’ Union) and business confederations, amendments to the Labour Code are still ongoing. According to Diogo Orvalho, “what is currently on the table is a fourth version of the draft bill”, referring to the most recent meeting between the parties, which has not yet resulted in a final decision.
For the lawyer specialising in Employment Law, “there are three or four measures on which it is difficult to reach consensus: opposition to reinstatement in cases of unfair dismissal; the possibility of resorting to outsourcing in the event of redundancy; and working time bank schemes.”
The professional partner at Abreu Advogados reiterates that, whatever agreement is ultimately reached, “it will be very different from the initial one”, as “the elections have significantly reduced the Government’s room for negotiation”.
