Maria João Melícias highlights that “competition rules serve the interests of businesses”

Maria João Melícias, co-head of the Competition, Regulation and EU practice at Abreu Advogados, emphasises in an interview with Jornal de Negócios that competition rules are essential for business growth and resilience, serving their interests by fostering investment, innovation and competitiveness.

With previous experience in the public sector and now working more closely with businesses, she argues that her mission remains unchanged: “It’s a continuation and, in fact, I even believe I’m better positioned now, working directly with business leaders, to advise them in the right direction to achieve success while navigating all these regulatory challenges.”

In the context of geopolitical instability — with the US and China gaining influence and Europe striving to secure internal supply chains and defence — Maria João Melícias states that Europe’s response must not be less competition. “The way forward lies in pursuing the major objective of completing the single market, which is still far from being a reality. And, in addition, through a more effective interaction between industrial policy and competition policy, to launch a new industrialisation agenda,” she stresses.
