Zara Jamal authors chapter on Islamic finance in Mozambique for Chambers

Zara Jamal has authored the Mozambique chapter of Islamic Finance 2026, an international guide published by Chambers and Partners as part of its Global Practice Guides series.

The publication analyses the legal and regulatory framework governing Islamic finance in Mozambique, where there is currently no standalone legislation or dedicated supervisory framework for Sharia-compliant products. These transactions must therefore be structured in accordance with the general rules applicable to banking, financial services, capital markets, taxation, insolvency and dispute resolution.

The topics covered include licensing requirements, supervision by the Bank of Mozambique, Sharia-compliance mechanisms, dispute resolution, working capital financing solutions, and the potential of instruments such as murabaha, mudaraba, musharaka, ijara and sukuk.

Zara Jamal also identifies the main opportunities for the development of this market, including the modernisation of payment systems, interoperability between banks and mobile money operators, greater financial inclusion, and demand for alternative sources of finance in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, housing and small and medium-sized enterprises.
