Patrícia Menezes publishes book on the unlawful termination of professional sports contracts
Patrícia Menezes is the author of A Desvinculação Ilícita do Profissional Desportivo – Vias de Tutela da Posição Jurídica da Entidade Empregadora (The Unlawful Termination of Professional Sports Contracts – Remedies Available to Protect the Employer’s Legal Position), published by Grupo Almedina.
The publication examines the early and unlawful termination of sports employment contracts and the mechanisms available to protect the affected employer, with a particular focus on professional football.
Drawing on contract law, employment law and sports law, the book addresses topics including the calculation of compensation payable to the club, the liability of the new employer, the cost of replacing the athlete and the impact of sports agents on contractual terminations.
The study also considers the development of FIFA regulations and Portuguese legislation, seeking to contribute to the debate on the balance between protecting clubs and safeguarding professional athletes’ freedom to work.
