Benedita Marques Pombo brings Space Law to schools as part of the “O Espaço Vai à Escola” initiative

Benedita Marques Pombo, Senior Associate Lawyer at Abreu Advogados, is taking part in the 13th edition of “O Espaço Vai à Escola” (Space Goes to School), an initiative promoted by ESERO Portugal, with a talk dedicated to the legal challenges of space exploration and use.

Under the theme “Law and Space”, the lawyer will lead sessions on 5 and 6 November for students aged 15 to 18, aiming to introduce young people to an area of law that is becoming increasingly relevant as space activities continue to expand.

Who owns space? Can companies exploit resources from an asteroid? Who is liable for damage caused by a falling satellite? These are some of the questions that will be explored, demonstrating how scenarios that might once have seemed like science fiction are raising increasingly tangible legal challenges.

Throughout the sessions, Benedita Marques Pombo will address topics such as space tourism, the management of orbital debris, and the role of States and private companies in space missions, introducing students to the legal framework governing human activity beyond Earth.

Organised annually by ESERO Portugal, the “O Espaço Vai à Escola” initiative runs from 6 October to 13 November this year, bringing scientists, engineers and specialists from different fields into schools across Portugal to spark students’ interest in the space sector and its many dimensions.

Abreu Advogados’ participation in this initiative highlights the importance of sharing legal knowledge and raising awareness among younger generations of the challenges associated with the development of the space sector.
