Tiago Corrêa do Amaral argues, in an opinion piece published by Jornal de Negócios, that the RED III Directive (Renewable Energy Directive III) represents a strategic opportunity for Portuguese industry to become more sustainable and competitive, although it requires significant investment and technological adaptation — particularly from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

RED III aims to strengthen the use of renewable energy through ambitious targets set for 2030 and 2035, challenging the industrial sector to accelerate decarbonisation and modernisation. Tiago Corrêa do Amaral explains that the directive imposes annual increases in the use of renewables, encourages the use of green hydrogen and biomethane, and simplifies administrative procedures for new projects.

The lawyer warns that “despite the long-term benefits, such as enhanced competitiveness and access to subsidies and tax incentives, companies — especially SMEs — face financial, technical, and human resource challenges in adapting to this new energy paradigm.”

This directive forms part of a comprehensive review of European policy for the promotion of renewable energy, and its transposition into Portuguese law is being coordinated by a working group tasked with drafting legislation and promoting public consultation.
