Pedro Barosa comments on the detention of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on SIC Notícias

Pedro Barosa, Head of the Criminal, Regulatory and Compliance practice at Abreu Advogados, was a guest on the programme Grande Edição on SIC Notícias to explain the legal parameters surrounding the detention of former Prince Andrew of the United Kingdom.

“If he is released, there is no formal charge. The Crown Prosecution Service, which is the body responsible for authorising the bringing of charges, has not yet done so. He will have been questioned and informed of the facts alleged against him and which are under investigation,” the lawyer notes.

Under the legal system of the United Kingdom, “for a detention to take place, there must already be sufficient evidence”. At issue are suspicions of misconduct in public office between 2001 and 2011. During that decade, the brother of the current King served as the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment. “By virtue of that role, he obtained sensitive information, which he is alleged to have passed to Jeffrey Epstein, with whom he apparently maintained a relationship.”
