“Fiscal policy will remain consistent”
Nuno Cunha Barnabé anticipates a continued approach to fiscal policy in the country, while noting that the next four years will be “very demanding and challenging” in terms of the volume of public debt refinancing, given Portugal’s dependence on the European Central Bank’s interest rate policy.
In an interview with NOW channel, the Abreu Advogados partner and co-coordinator of the Tax Law practice also addresses other topics, such as VAT on essential goods or the taxation of large fortunes and inheritances.
“There are only a handful of countries that impose taxes on large inheritances. These are extremely difficult taxes to design, technically complex, and highly vulnerable to capital relocation. We need to revisit the taxation of capital income. There have been some adjustments, but with so many ongoing changes, it increasingly makes little sense.”
