Tiago Corrêa do Amaral highlights the positive impact of the end of the clawback on the Portuguese electricity sector

Tiago Corrêa do Amaral, partner at Abreu Advogados, analyses the impact of ending the mechanism known as the clawback on the Portuguese electricity sector, stressing that the Government’s decision to abolish it from 2025 represents an important step towards regulatory stability and market competitiveness.

In an article published by Jornal de Negócios, the lawyer highlighted that this mechanism, created in 2013 to balance the Iberian Electricity Market, became over time complex, unpredictable and ineffective, ultimately penalising domestic generation and discouraging investment.

According to Tiago Corrêa do Amaral, “the elimination of the clawback removes an additional cost from the electricity production chain, which may translate into more stable and competitive prices”.

The measure, already welcomed by industry associations and specialised analysts, is seen as a sign of confidence in market dynamics and as an alignment with European best practices, with potential benefits for consumers, businesses and the economy as a whole.
