Sónia Gemas Donário has been a Partner at Abreu Advogados since 2022, focusing her practice in the areas of Competition, Regulation and the European Union, Art and Cultural Heritage Law and also Energy & Natural Resources. She is Co-Coordinator of the Art Sector and the Cultural Project.

She advises companies in all areas of competition law, both national and EU, and also in cases before the European Court of Human Rights. He taught European Union law, including competition policy, for many years at public and private universities.

In Art and Cultural Heritage Law, she has advised cultural associations and foundations, museums, entertainment promoters, artists, collectors and galleries over the years. She is invited to lecture on topics related to cultural heritage law at universities.

She was a trainee at the Court of Justice of the EU.
She was a lawyer at the Competition Authority (PCA) and represented the organisation on European Commission working groups.

In energy law, he has focused on renewables, electric mobility, the internal energy market and decarbonisation.

She taught for many years at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (FDUL)L, where she was a PhD student with a thesis in the area of Regulation and Competition. At the same time, she taught at FDUL’s European Institute and at the Autonomous University of Lisbon as an Assistant Lecturer and Regent. She is currently a guest lecturer in Competition Law, EU Law and Art and Cultural Heritage Law. She is the author of publications in her areas of expertise.

Experience

As a lawyer at the Competition Authority, she participated in various sanctioning processes, prepared opinions and recommendations to be presented to the government by the PCA and was a member of European Commission Working Groups related to the automotive sector and the liberal professions;

Advising museums, associations and foundations, artists, show promoters, galleries, record industry companies, including opinions, drawing up contracts, drafting internal regulations, cultural support, representing them before public bodies, and day-to-day monitoring of various issues;

She has represented many national and multinational companies in merger notification procedures before the PCA and the European Commission;

Among many others, she has advised companies and associations of companies in the port, chemical, energy, gaming, retail, online retail and distribution, public air and road transport, health, hardware and software manufacturers on all competition law matters and their representation before the PCA or the European Commission;

Advising public organisations on State Aid;

Advising a European company in the automotive sector on electric mobility with a view to its entry into the Portuguese market, as well as various other market players in the electricity sector (companies and associations), on matters of competition and sector regulation, working with ERSE and the Competition Authority;

Creation, implementation and training of Competition Law Compliance programmes in national and multinational companies;

Advising a multinational company in the telecommunications sector on an important case before ANACOM.
