“The digital environment is a fertile ground for crime and the spread of hate speech, especially due to the anonymity the internet provides,” states José Maria Formosinho Sanchez in an opinion piece published in Jornal de Negócios.

The associated partner at Abreu Advogados calls for regulation similar to that applied to financial services for those who use digital services. “If those who disseminate false information capable of disrupting the normal functioning of the market are punished, why should those who spread false information that incites discrimination, hatred, or violence not be held accountable?”

In this article, the co-coordinator of the Criminal, Sanctioning, and Compliance practice area advocates for strengthening the prevention of digital hate crimes, equipping authorities “with more efficient and effective means that help speed up justice while saving resources and time, as well as investing in training initiatives on this issue.”
