Manuel Santos Vitor and André Pereira da Fonseca contribute to the Dispute Resolution in Africa 2025 Guide

Manuel Santos Vitor, a partner at Abreu Advogados, and André Pereira da Fonseca, professional partner, are the authors of the chapters on Angola and Guinea-Bissau in the 4th edition of the Dispute Resolution in Africa 2025 Guide, published by Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer.

This guide presents litigation procedures and trends across several African jurisdictions, describing how each country’s legal system and dispute resolution mechanisms operate, enabling professionals and investors to clearly understand the legal rules and practices of each African jurisdiction.

The Angola chapter describes a civil law system strongly influenced by Portuguese law, with independent courts. It also highlights the country’s accession to the New York Convention and ongoing reforms aimed at modernising courts and procedures.

The Guinea-Bissau chapter, also based on a Portuguese-derived legal system, notes the country’s integration into the Organisation for the Harmonisation of Business Law in Africa (Organisation pour l’Harmonisation en Afrique du Droit des Affaires – OHADA). It further outlines the structure of the courts, civil and arbitral procedure rules, mechanisms for the enforcement of decisions, and the main reforms currently under way.
