Statements from the European Commissioner for Defence and Space
On 16 July 2025, the European Commission presented its Proposal for the European Multiannual Financial Agreement, which will determine the joint budget of the Commission and the other European institutions until 2034.
Andrius Kubilius, European Commissioner for Defence and Space, made a statement in a press release issued by the European Union on the proposed budget allocation for his portfolio.
In particular, he highlighted the unprecedented increase in the budgetary allocation for these areas, which has stabilised at EUR 131,000,000,000 (one hundred and thirty-one billion euros), presenting the space sector as a strategic necessity for the achievement of the Union’s priorities and for the defence of its citizens.
The European Fund for Competitiveness should therefore introduce new initiatives to be financed, such as a Government Earth Observation Service to improve users’ situational awareness in the field of security and defence, as well as initiatives to ensure unhindered access to space for the Union and the promotion of the space economy.
These Statements will also have taken into account the approaching Interministerial Meeting organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), scheduled for November 2025, where the topics of space innovation, the potential of data and the space industry, and the need for a manufacturing network and an industrial base to support its development are expected to be addressed and discussed.
It will now be incumbent upon the industry to interpret the Commissioner’s message and to steer its efforts towards the conquest of this new frontier.”
