“People no longer look at gender when deciding whom to promote”
International Women’s Day is approaching, a moment that invites reflection on the role of women in society, the progress that has been made, and the challenges that may still remain in achieving genuine gender equality.
In this context, Carmo Sousa Machado was a guest on the Advocatus Podcast, recognised as an example of female leadership in the Portuguese legal sector, where she highlighted that there has been real progress towards equality.
Carmo Sousa Machado emphasised that “people no longer look at gender when deciding whom to promote.”
Having been the first woman to assume the role of Managing Partner in Portugal and also the first Chairwoman of a law firm, she noted that she was aware of the importance of that experience, although she only fully realised later the true impact of the position and how it enabled her to inspire others. She also acknowledged the role of male partners who “gave her that opportunity and placed their trust in her”.
Carmo Sousa Machado also spoke about the balance between personal and professional life, stressing that it is possible to reach the top while maintaining that balance: “organisation is key, as well as having strong support networks, both at home and at work.”
A “dreamer in the best sense of the word”, she also recalled moments from her childhood and youth when she always sought to challenge injustice and defend those in more vulnerable positions. When asked for advice to young lawyers, she highlighted: “invest in your training, always try to go further, surprise others and believe in yourself.”
