Abreu Advogados and NOVA FCT launch DataScience for Lawyers course

Abreu Advogados, its Knowledge Institute and NOVA School of Science & Technology (NOVA FCT) have joined forces to launch the new DataScience for Lawyers course—an innovative training programme designed to equip legal professionals with advanced skills in data science, statistics, and quantitative analysis.

The course aims to foster innovation and optimise legal processes through the integration of machine learning techniques, big data analysis, and data visualisation—tools aligned with the modern needs of the legal sector. Participants will be empowered to improve the efficiency of case management and base strategic decisions on quantifiable evidence, thereby reducing uncertainty and mitigating risks.

This pioneering initiative is aimed at legal professionals seeking to incorporate technological and analytical knowledge into their legal practice, including solicitors (both in law firms and in-house), judges, legal advisers, law firm managers, legal consultants, entrepreneurs (in legal tech), and law students aspiring to work at the forefront of the intersection between law, technology, and data science.

The course will be delivered by lecturers with extensive experience in fields such as mathematics, management, engineering, law, innovation, and technology. The programme is coordinated by:

• Isabel Gomes, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at NOVA FCT and researcher at NOVA Math.
Luís Barreto Xavier, Innovation Of Counsel at Abreu Advogados, President of the Abreu Knowledge Institute, and Visiting Professor at UCP.
Ricardo Henriques, Executive Board Member at Abreu Advogados and at the Abreu Knowledge Institute.

The teaching staff also includes other specialists such as Alexandre Zavaglia, Catarina Mascarenhas (Of Counsel at Abreu Advogados), Hélder Santos, Diogo Ribeiro dos Santos, and José Maria Alves Pereira (Associared Partner at Abreu Advogados).

This intensive 40-hour training course is structured into five modules, offering a blend of theory and practice. Participants will be challenged to develop a data analysis project applied to a real legal problem, allowing for the immediate application of the course content.

“At Abreu Advogados, we believe that the legal profession of the future requires quantitative tools, data-driven critical thinking, and technological literacy. With the DataScience for Lawyers course, in partnership with NOVA FCT, we are taking a decisive step towards empowering legal professionals to navigate an increasingly evidence- and technology-driven legal world. This initiative reflects our commitment to innovation, applied knowledge, and a more efficient, informed, and transformative legal practice,” says Ricardo Henriques.

In turn, Isabel Gomes highlights that this course will unite “academic excellence and technological innovation to transform how law is practised and conceived. More than just a training programme, DataScience for Lawyers promises to be an opportunity for legal professionals to position themselves at the forefront of the digital transformation of the legal sector.”

The DataScience for Lawyers course will commence in November 2025 in a blended learning format, combining evening online classes with in-person opening and closing sessions held on Saturdays at Abreu Advogados’ premises in Lisbon.
