Abreu Advogados among Europe’s most innovative law firms in the FT Innovative Lawyers Europe 2026
Abreu Advogados has once again been recognised by the Financial Times as one of Europe’s most innovative law firms. In the 2026 edition of the FT Innovative Lawyers Europe, the firm ranks among the top three Portuguese law firms and has been nominated in two categories with projects distinguished as “Commended”.
In the Innovative Lawyers in Private Capital category, the Financial Times highlighted Abreu Advogados’ advice to Generali Asset Management on a multi-jurisdictional bond financing. The team, led by Rodrigo Formigal, redesigned the transaction, which had initially been structured in Spain, and shifted the centre of gravity of the financing to Portugal. Abreu Advogados acted as lead counsel in a structure with no documented precedent in the Portuguese market.
In the Innovation in Training and Change Management category, Abreu Advogados’ multidisciplinary training model on European artificial intelligence regulation was recognised. The model was developed by the Abreu Advogados Knowledge Institute, under the leadership of Luís Barreto Xavier, in coordination with the Digital Transformation Department and the Human Resources Department. It includes initiatives such as the “Law and Practice of Artificial Intelligence” course, in partnership with Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Instituto Superior Técnico, and the “Data Science for Lawyers” programme, with NOVA University Lisbon.
With these distinctions, Abreu Advogados remains at the forefront and reaffirms its commitment to innovation. This year, the firm ranks 28th in the FT Law Firm Index and has featured in the index’s top 30 since 2023, having reached 5th place in 2025. Along the way, it won the Innovation in Skills Development category in 2023 and the Innovative Lawyers in Responsible Business category in 2025.
