Nuno Luís Sapateiro highlights how technology advances and challenges regulation
Nuno Luís Sapateiro emphasized the accelerated transformation of the insurance sector, driven by technology, including new business models and the growth of insurtechs, while also addressing the balance between innovation and regulation.
In a recent episode of “EA Talks”, powered by Europ Assistance, the partner at Abreu Advogados argued that technological evolution outpaces the speed of regulation. Nevertheless, he maintains that the current legal framework is flexible enough to accommodate innovation, and that it is up to regulators to strike a balance between fostering sector development and ensuring consumer protection.
Nuno Luís Sapateiro also noted that the pandemic played a key role in accelerating digitalization, profoundly changing how insurance is purchased, making the process faster and more intuitive, while also creating new challenges. He further stressed the need for a joint response between the insurance sector and the State to address emerging risks such as climate and cyber events, reinforcing the importance of sustainable innovation in an increasingly complex market.
