José Maria Formosinho Sanchez highlights that corruption in Portugal is not related to lack of Regulation
Following the recent results of the Corruption Perceptions Index, José Maria Formosinho Sanchez, Associated Partner at Abreu Advogados, stated that regulation exists but is not being effectively implemented or enforced.
In a comment during CNN Portugal’s Arena program, the lawyer argued that “passing more regulations, when the current ones are not being implemented, would only create more complexity and work for entities,” which have now “less resources”.
In addition to the lack of resources and limitations in the implementation of regulations and enforcement, José Maria Formosinho Sanchez also highlighted the need for education. It is already planned for the high school, but not for university and “there are academic programs, namely in Law, Economics, Management, and Political Science, that should have a mandatory compliance course.”
