Inês Sequeira Mendes reflects on a 2025 marked by challenges and opportunities and looks ahead to a 2026 focused on digitalisation

“2025 was a challenging year for the legal sector, requiring a strong capacity for adaptation, in an international, geopolitical and economic context that remained unstable, but which also created opportunities across several areas,” says Inês Sequeira Mendes in an article published by Jornal de Negócios.

The Managing Partner of Abreu Advogados also looks ahead to 2026, in statements to the same publication, forecasting “a year of investment in digitalisation, with moderate economic growth” in Portugal. Inês Sequeira Mendes also highlights that the Portuguese legal profession will need to adapt swiftly to change, without relinquishing sustainability or the essential values of trust, ethics, rigour, independence and confidentiality.

In a year of “consolidation of the profound changes we have been witnessing”, the lawyer highlights the central challenge of “rapid adaptation to technological acceleration, digitalisation, increasing regulatory complexity and the new expectations of citizens and businesses.”
