Joana Maldonado Reis warns of delays and duplication of information under the new group VAT rules

Companies that form part of a VAT group under the new regime will be required to submit to the Tax Authority (AT) the lists of customers and suppliers relating to the transactions that gave rise to the VAT charged or deducted, whenever they apply for a VAT refund.

Joana Maldonado Reis, a contracted partner at Abreu Advogados, warns in an article published by Jornal de Negócios that this requirement “will undoubtedly make refund requests more time-consuming, and it is also a duplication of information, as the AT already has all this data in the system”.

It is yet another case in which “it is the taxpayer who ends up organising and carrying out the information-gathering work on behalf of the AT”, concludes the lawyer, a specialist in Tax Law.
