Energy to Transform Lives: Project in Guinea-Bissau Wins Financial Times European Award
We believe that the legal profession, as a pillar of the Rule of Law, has a unique responsibility in shaping society and an enormous potential for positive impact.
In this spirit, we celebrate the Responsible Business award at the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards Europe 2025, with the groundbreaking project for a new solar power plant in Bolama, Guinea-Bissau, which will change lives and bring electricity to around 10,000 people.
Entitled “Ianda Guiné! Ação Lus ku Iagu”, the project was advised on a pro bono basis for the Portuguese NGO TESE and funded by the European Union and the World Bank. It consisted of creating an innovative contractual framework for the construction and operation of the first solar power plant in the Bijagós archipelago.
As partner Bruno Azevedo Rodrigues highlights, “responsible business is not a slogan – it is leadership in action”: “This project proves that responsible business is not about profit, but about impact,” says Bruno Azevedo Rodrigues (Co-coordinator of the Projects & Structured Finance industry), together with partner Manuel Santos Vitor (Co-coordinator of Corporate, Commercial and M&A and of the Guinea-Bissau Desk), led the project, with the full support of Abreu’s Pro Bono Committee.
