Luís Barreto Xavier analyses the global standing of Portuguese universities

Luís Barreto Xavier reflects on the mission of Portuguese higher education in an increasingly competitive international context, in the opinion piece “Portuguese Universities and Global Competition”, published by ECO.

In the article, he argues that Portuguese universities should distinguish themselves through the diversity of their missions, their openness to the world, and their ability to attract international talent, responding to a context shaped by globalisation, digitalisation and declining birth rates. He also underlines the importance of institutional autonomy and active participation in global scientific dialogue.

Luís Barreto Xavier also highlights the need to reinvent the university, preserving and strengthening the success stories built over recent years, rather than limiting its international projection.
