Catarina Mascarenhas analyses the geopolitics of data and Europe’s role

Catarina Mascarenhas, of counsel at Abreu Advogados, identifies “a true geopolitics of data” in the rivalry between global blocs, she told Jornal Económico.

“The United States prioritises rapid innovation and the monetisation of data; China focuses on centralised control; and Europe seeks to establish a model founded on trust and regulation, rooted in fundamental rights and transparency,” she explained.

In response to this context, Catarina Mascarenhas recalls that the European Union has launched the Data Act, the Data Governance Act, and the AI Act, “promoting secure global data flows and balancing innovation with protection”.
