Ana Rodrigues de Almeida says compensation may be possible over failures in national exam marking

Ana Rodrigues de Almeida appeared on CNN Portugal to analyse the errors and delays affecting the marking of national examinations. She said that students or teachers may take legal action if they are able to demonstrate that they suffered specific harm.

“There must be clear evidence of loss,” she stressed, adding that, in such cases, “legal action may be possible”. Ana Rodrigues de Almeida also drew attention to the “extremely difficult” situation faced by exam markers, who were working to tight deadlines while continuing to receive answers for assessment.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Education has once again extended the marking deadline. As of yesterday, 98% of the answers had been marked, with the remainder due to be completed this Wednesday.

According to the Ministry, the delays are due to poorly scanned or unscanned answer sheets, examinations submitted late and answers requiring reassessment. Despite the postponement, the Ministry has confirmed that the results will be published on Friday, 17 July.
