Luís Barreto Xavier appointed member of the General Council of the Centre for Judicial Studies

Luís Barreto Xavier, consultant at Abreu Advogados and President of the Knowledge Institute, has been elected by the Assembly of the Republic to join the General Council of the Centre for Judicial Studies (CEJ), as a person of recognised merit.

The election took place on 16 April, following a hearing before the Assembly of the Republic’s Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees.

The Centre for Judicial Studies is the body responsible for the initial and ongoing training of judges and Public Prosecutor’s Office magistrates, playing a central role in the qualification of justice professionals in Portugal. The General Council forms part of the CEJ’s organisational structure, alongside other bodies such as the Director, the Disciplinary Council and the Pedagogical Council.

A consultant at Abreu Advogados since 2018, Luís Barreto Xavier has been President of the Knowledge Institute since 2019 and works as a legal scholar and consultant, particularly in matters relating to Private International Law, Constitutional Law, innovation and digital transformation.

This appointment recognises Luís Barreto Xavier’s academic, legal and institutional career, as well as his contribution to reflection on the current challenges facing Law, Justice and legal training in Portugal.
