Carmo Sousa Machado takes the position of Chair at Multilaw

Carmo Sousa Machado, partner and chairman of Abreu Advogados, is the first Portuguese woman to chair the recognised international association of independent law firms.

Carmo Sousa Machado took her position, on October 19, as Chair of the Multinational Association of Independent Law Firms (Multilaw) in a ceremony that took place at the 2019 annual meeting of the Association, in the city of Dallas (Texas) in the United States.

The election took place in October 2018, in which Carmo Sousa Machado was elected Chair-Elect, at a meeting of the Association, in Bangkok, Thailand.

This is not the first time Carmo Sousa Machado has achieved a milestone in advocacy. The partner and head of Abreu Advogados’ Employment practice area, has several distinctions and historical moments for the management of law firms in Portugal, such as the fact of being the first woman to become managing partner, in 2004 and, also, being the first woman to become chairman, in 2017.

Abreu Advogados has been a member of Multilaw since 2002, having actively joined and participated in activities and in several projects. Carmo Sousa Machado has been playing different roles in the Association: the election to the Board, since 2008, integration in the Management Committee, since 2013, the position of Chair for both the EMEA Regional Committee, between 2013 and 2018, and for Multilaw’s Practice Groups & Industry Conferences Committee, between 2012 and 2015.
