Abreu Advogados contributes to the IATA Liability Report 2026

Abreu Advogados has once again contributed to the IATA Liability Report 2026 by preparing the chapter dedicated to Portugal, further strengthening its position as a leading firm in the aviation sector.

Published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the report examines the main legal developments in the aviation sector worldwide, including case law developments relating to the 1999 Montreal Convention, European regulation on passenger rights, and other relevant matters such as competition, drone regulation and the impact of recent trends in the sector.

The firm’s contribution was prepared by João Marques de Almeida, co-head of the Aviation, Maritime and Transport sector, with the support of trainee lawyers Laura Cecília Lourenço and Maria Inês Carapeta, in the context of the firm’s regular advisory work for airlines, particularly on regulatory and passenger rights matters.

The 2026 edition includes 14 relevant Portuguese court decisions addressing issues such as international jurisdiction and applicable law, time limits for the exercise of passenger rights, compensation for flight disruption, and extraordinary circumstances.

The Liability Report is coordinated by Condon & Forsyth together with HFW, with Abreu Advogados being the only law firm responsible for the contributions relating to Portugal. The report is presented annually at the IATA Legal Symposium, the leading international gathering for aviation legal professionals, and will now be shared with airlines around the world.
