João Marques de Almeida

João Marques de Almeida is a Professional Partner and has been with Abreu Advogados since 2024 in the Litigation & Arbitration area, working mainly in the Aviation, Maritime & Transportation, and Insurance industries.

With more than 20 years’ experience, the lawyer is frequently involved in various cross-border and large-scale disputes related to the aviation industry, involving the main operators in the industry, as well as in arbitration disputes (national and international), either as a lawyer or as an arbitrator appointed by the parties.

João Marques de Almeida frequently represents airlines, aircraft and engine manufacturers, maintenance organisations (MROs Part-145), training organisations (ATOs), airport operators, air traffic service providers, ground handling, and other aviation service providers.

In the insurance industry, he represents the main national and international insurers and reinsurers in a number of high-value and media exposure claims (large-risk insurance policies).

He is responsible for advising on a significant number of high-profile cross-border corporate and commercial disputes (including in Portuguese-speaking African countries), many of which are in collaboration with recognised international law firms.

He was a member of the Board of Directors and Director of the Litigation Practice Group of Iurope (an international network of independent law firms). He is currently a member of the Portuguese Arbitration Association and EALA (European Air Law Association).
