“Guinea-Bissau is a country with much to offer and where there is still much to be done”

Africa with its eyes on the future, the world with its eyes on Africa. These were the overarching messages conveyed during the presentation of “Guinea-Bissau – Investment Guide 2023/2024,” a publication by the Portugal-Guinea-Bissau Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIPGB), supported by Abreu Advogados.

Manuel Santos Vitor, partner at Abreu Advogados, emphasized that while Guinea-Bissau is a very small country, it serves as a gateway to markets with hundreds of millions of people. “It is a country with much to offer and where there is still much to be done,” he highlighted. Guinea-Bissau boasts petroleum, mineral, and agricultural resources, and is a “paradise for ecological and environmental tourism,” which is attracting an increasing number of visitors.

Luís Marques Mendes, of counsel at Abreu Advogados and State Councillor of Portugal, stressed that both Portugal and Guinea-Bissau need investment, making this guide an important contribution.

Marques Mendes pointed out that there is a turning point in Africa’s relations with the West. The African continent, in general, “will receive more attention from the Western world than it has so far.” He cited “a clear sign of greater interest,” exemplified by Joe Biden’s visit to Angola.

For the President of CCIPGB, Jorge Sousa, the reissue of this guide, nearly a decade after its first edition, “is a fundamental testament to those who believe in the entrepreneurial capacity of the Portuguese and the Guineans.”

The presentation, held at the headquarters of Abreu Advogados in Lisbon on December 3, gathered dozens of guests, including notable figures such as the Ambassador of Guinea-Bissau to Portugal, Artur Silva, the President of the West African Bank (BAO – Banco da África Ocidental), Diogo Lacerda Machado, and Pedro Passos Coelho, former Prime Minister and Professor at ISCSP.
