Manuel Castro Almeida

Manuel Castro Almeida was a senior technician and later an administrator at the North of Portugal Regional Coordination and Development Commission between 1982 and 1991.

In 1991, 1995 and 1999 was elected Deputy to the Assembly of the Republic, where he coordinated the PSD deputies in the parliamentary committees of Economy, Finance and Planning, and Public Works, Transport and Communications. He was also vice-president of the parliamentary group.

Between December 1993 and October 1995 he was Secretary of State for Education and Sport.

In December 2001, he was elected Mayor of São João da Madeira and was re-elected in 2005 and 2009.

Manuel was Vice-President of Metropolitan Council of O´Porto and President of the Association of Municipalities of Terras de Santa Maria.

In April 2013, he was appointed Secretary of State for Regional Development, with responsibility for the preparation, negotiation and launch of the Portugal 2020 cycle of European funds.

Manuel headed the Portugal 2020 Interministerial Coordination Committee, where all Portugal 2020 specific regulations were approved.

He was also in charge of the Agency for Development and Cohesion which has the mission of ensuring the general coordination of the European funds.

He shared the supervision of the Development Financial Institution “Banco de Fomento”.
