Luís Marques Mendes is an Of Counsel and has been at Abreu Advogados since 2012. He is currently the Chairman of the firm’s Strategic Committee and part of the Angolan Desk.

Before joining Abreu Advogados, during the 1980’s he practiced law, but put his law career on hold for two consecutive decades takin roles in politics, parliament and government.

In government, he was a member of four constitutional governments where, over a thirteen-year period, he took on a number of Secretary of State and Minister positions.

In parliament, he was the President of the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Portuguese Communities where he gained specific experience in the relationship with Portuguese Speaking African Countries.

In politics he was the President of the Social Democratic Party, a leadership which lasted approximately three years.

After having left politics and before joining Abreu Advogados he was an administrator in several companies in the energy sector.

Currently, having left the political sphere he is a member of the State Council appointed by the President of the Republic and comments regularly on national and international politics on a major Portuguese network.
