Historic Result in Viena of the Law Degree Team of the Nova University in Lisbon

Nova’s LLM students Catarina Carreiro, Catarina Cerqueira e Carolina Roque, coached by André Pereira da Fonseca from Abreu Advogados and Rute Alves from PLMJ has obtained an historic result by being the first Portuguese team to ever reach the finals at the Willem C. Vis Moot Court contest that took place Viena from the 12th to the 18th April.

The Portuguese team was 22d, out of a total of 376 teams, and received an “Honorable Mention” for the quality of its “Written Memorandum for Respondent”.

On its way to Vienna, the team had already won the Pre-Moot contest in Madrid, was the“First Runner Up” at the Pre-Moot contest in Lisbon, having won the prize for the “Best Oralist” (Carolina Roque) and came 4th amongst 79 teams at the Pre-Moot contest in Belgrade.

This contest has been taking place since 1994 and is the biggest and most prestigious “moot court” in the World. 376 teams from universities from around the world compete against each other in several simulated commercial arbitration Court cases, requiring the preparation of several legal briefs and an intensive analysis of the relevant facts and applicable laws.

The coaching of André Pereira da Fonseca and of Rute Alves is part of a protocol signed between the Nova University of Law and the Portuguese Arbitration Associations under 40. André is an Associated Partner at Abreu Advogados.
